Scholarship Overview

  • This scholarship is for third-year Underrepresented in Medicine medical students from accredited US medical schools to participate in fourth-year externships between the months of July-January.

  • A $1,500 stipend will be awarded to defray living and traveling expenses incurred while on a 4-week elective rotation at Baylor University Medical Center.

Who should apply?

  • Students from LCME or AOA accredited medical schools within the United States and Puerto Rico may qualify for our program if from a professionally underrepresented background and have been approved or are eligible for a VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) rotation on our campus.

Program details

  • Atrium Health has established a 4th year medical student rotation scholarship (maximum $2,000)

  • This scholarship is designed for students who are underrepresented in medicine to help offset the costs associated with rotating away from a student's home institution. Additionally, students will be invited to participate in a variety of extra-curricular events designed to support underrepresented students while they are on an away rotation at Atrium Health. 


Eligibility

  • Third-year medical students who:

    • Attend U.S. accredited allopathic medical schools (i.e., are enrolled in Medical Degree-granting programs)

    • Attend osteopathic medical schools (i.e., are enrolled in Doctor of Osteopathy-granting programs)

    • Are from groups under-represented in medicine, specifically Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian

Who is Not Eligible for VEPSUM?

Applications will not be accepted from medical students who:

  • Attend non-US medical schools including currently enrolled in or graduated from foreign medical schools

  • Attend non-AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) accredited medical schools

  • F-1 Visa foreign students who attend U.S. Medical Schools

  • Are not from groups under-represented in medicine

Program Details

  • The application process is open from December 1st through March 15th of the third year of medical school and decisions will be announced on or before May 1, of the same year.

  • The 4-week electives take place between August and October of the fourth year of medical school, depending on availability of individual placements.

  • Students must have completed their required core clerkships before starting the VEPSUM program rotation.

  • A completed transcript with grades from these clerkships is necessary.

  • There is no VEPSUM application fee.

  • All accepted VEPSUM Students may receive funding up to $2,000 as a stipend to defray living expenses.

  • For accepted VEPSUM applicants who are not from New York City metro area housing arrangements are made by the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs and housing costs are deducted from the total stipend. Students from the New York City metro area are expected to cover their own housing and travel costs.

  • Students have the opportunity to network with residency program directors, residents, minority faculty, and students, and have access to the Office of Graduate Medical Education, Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, medical school library, and departmental grand rounds, seminars and workshops.

  • A minority faculty/student dinner seminar is held during each rotation.

  • Educational books and resource materials are distributed at the start of each rotation.

  • On a case by case basis, we will consider eligible applicants who wish to participate in the VEPSUM Program in elective departments not listed above.

  • Four-week rotation in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed

  • $500 travel stipend

  • $600 food/meals stipend

  • Interested applicants should complete both an application for the four-week rotation (MED626 Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, Michigan State Univ-Gr Rapids) through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunity (VSLO) site with the AAMC, in addition to the Underrepresented in Medicine scholarship application.   • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The VSLO application for our program opens on April 1, and the Underrepresented in Medicine Scholarship application can be completed at any time. Scholarship applications will not be considered complete until both components are completed.

  • The Diversity Scholarship is available for clerkships at all three Mayo Clinic campuses. Eligible students must be enrolled in U.S. medical schools and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Eligibility

Fourth-year students in their final year of medical school who are from groups underrepresented in medicine and meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply to the RUSH Visiting Scholars Program:

  • Pursuing a medical degree at an LCME-accredited institution

  • Are in good academic standing

  • Have completed all required M3 core rotations by June 30, 2023

  • Are a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident or of asylee, refugee or DACA status.

Program Details

Students interested in the RUSH Visiting Scholars Program can apply online. An invitation to submit the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application will follow. For individuals accepted into the program, RUSH Medical College will provide stipend of $ 2000 and waive the VSLO application fee.

Eligibility

    Program Details

  • $2000 in reimbursement to defray travel, housing and living expenses during a sub-internship

  • As part of the program, students will receive career advising including preparation for academic medicine pathway, an interview for the residency program, and a letter of evaluation

  • The application process is open from March 13 – April 14, 2024 of the third year of medical school

  • There is no application fee.

  • The 4-week electives will take place during the following blocks: July 1 – July 26; July 29 – Aug 23; Aug 26 – Sept. 20; & Sept. 23 – Oct. 18 of the fourth year of medical school. Students must adhere to our block dates.

    • Senior students may Students interested in research or individual study need to identify and obtain approval from a faculty supervisor prior to application

PM&R Elective Rotation for Underrepresented Students

  • Eligibility

    • Underrepresented definition: Black (African/African American), Latino/Hispanic (Mexican American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American), Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds

    • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

    • Pursuing a medical degree at an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school

    • Be in their final year of medical school

    • Be in good standing at their medical school

    • Must have complete all core clerkships in Internal Medicine, OBGYN, Peds, and Surgery

    • Must apply to rotate up to and including Block 20

  • Benefits

    • Participate in four-week elective rotations in peds or adult inpatient rehabilitation, clinical management of chronic pain, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, research or individual study.

    • Matched with a faculty and/or resident advisor during the rotation to provide mentorship and networking opportunities

In order to further promote greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the field of medicine and to enrich our applicant pool,  Sparrow Hospital and the Office of Graduate Medical Education is proud to offer individual $1,000 scholarships for medical students that come from traditionally underrepresented racial/ethnic groups. This scholarship may be utilized for travel, housing, meals, and other expenses related to time spent on these two to four -week electives at Sparrow Hospital.  This scholarship will be provided based upon successful completion of the rotation and after submission of appropriate documentation of incurred expenses up to $1,000.

Eligibility

  • Students must currently be in their 3rd year of medical school applying for 4th year electives

  • Students much be in good academic standing at an LCME accredited U.S. Medical School or COCA accredited U.S. Osteopathic Medical School

  • Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents

  • Students must come from a background that is traditionally underrepresented in medicine which is defined as the following races/ethnicities:

    • African American

    • Hispanic

    • Native American

    • Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian

  • Students must reside a minimum of 60 miles from Lansing, Michigan.

  • Students should submit to Sparrow Hospital a visiting rotation application through VSAS with all institutional requirements completed.

  • Eligibility

    • The student must be in good academic standing and enrolled in their fourth or final year M.D. or D.O. degree program during their elective rotation at Stanford—current 3rd year medical students (rising 4th year students)

      The student must also be from a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association

      Applicants must express strong interest in applying to a Stanford residency program. Selection will be based on past clinical and academic achievement

      Applicants will write an essay describing how they believe that their background and experience would contribute to diversity, broadly defined in SCORE

The Kevin M. Means, M.D., Underrepresented in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Student Scholarship

The UAMS Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is committed to increasing diversity in the field of PM&R and actively promotes equity and inclusion among our faculty, trainees, staff, and patients. Our goal is to expand the diversity within our department and the field, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical ability, or identity, by promoting diversity-related initiatives and culturally-competent education and patient care.

The department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee will evaluate the applications and award one scholarship per academic year to a deserving medical student based on merit, scholarship, and need.         One of our diversity goals is to increase racial and ethnic diversity reflecting the population of the Cincinnati and surrounding community that we serve.     Selected students will participate in the clinical activities of the chosen department including conferences and other educational activities. Students will receive up to $950 for housing during their elective that may be accompanied by a stipend provided by the individual department to which the student is assigned.* Electives are available from July through February.

    • Jeannette E. South‐Paul, MD Visiting Clerkship (JSPVC)

      Named for Jeannette E. South‐Paul, MD, Andrew Mathieson Professor and Chair of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine and distinguished PittMed graduate, this program is designed to expand opportunities for visiting underrepresented minority (URM) medical students to explore residency opportunities at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).   The clerkship is a one‐month clinical experience for senior medical students who have completed core clerkships.  In addition, the program will connect participants professionally and socially with URM faculty and community physician role models.  JSPVC provides a $2000 stipend for living and travel expenses.
